Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to step down amid growing discontent within his Liberal Party, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday.
The announcement could come as early as Monday, according to three anonymous sources familiar with the situation. Trudeau’s resignation, if confirmed, would precede a scheduled Liberal Party caucus on Wednesday, leaving uncertainty about whether he would remain as interim leader while the party selects a new head.
Facing declining popularity, Trudeau has encountered increasing challenges, including narrowly surviving no-confidence votes and internal cabinet dissent. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in December, citing disagreements over Trudeau’s handling of impending US tariffs.
Trudeau’s government has also been strained by incoming US President Donald Trump’s threats of a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and public comments undermining Trudeau’s leadership, including suggestions of Canada becoming the 51st US state.
While Trudeau had pledged to lead the Liberals into the 2025 elections, mounting pressures and internal fractures appear to have accelerated calls for change at the top.
