Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of Alberta in Canada’s future during a Friday press conference. He highlighted cooperation between Ottawa and the province, focusing on recent agreements designed to enhance the nation’s economy and energy sector.
Carney stated, “Canada is the greatest country in the world, but it can be better. We’re working on making it better; we’re working with Alberta on making it better.” He further noted that Alberta being at the heart of these improvements is essential.
Earlier, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced plans for a vote in October to determine if the province should initiate the legal process for a binding referendum on separation from Canada. Despite her personal support for remaining in the country, Smith criticized a recent court ruling that blocked a separatist petition due to insufficient consultation with Indigenous groups.
Polls indicate most Albertans favor staying within Canada; however, this issue is expected to exacerbate political tensions between Alberta and the federal government.
