China’s EV Prices Drop Below US Average Car Cost at Beijing Auto Show

China’s Beijing Auto Show highlights the stark contrast in new car prices between China and the US. In March, the average new car in the US had a list price of $51,456, according to Kelley Blue Book. Conversely, in China, over 200 battery-powered models, including hybrids, are available for less than $25,000.

Reuters analyzed DCar data to identify five best-selling electric vehicles in China that start under $12,000. These small EVs aren’t sold in American showrooms and may never be. At about the price of an average new US car, a Chinese consumer could purchase all five EVs.

The Geely EX2 was the top-selling vehicle in 2025 across all categories. This small EV features a front trunk, storage compartments throughout the cabin, and a 14.6-inch central touchscreen running on a system developed by Geely. The top trim offers a range of about 255 miles on China’s test standard.

The “Star Wish” model was popular from its 2024 launch and has been sold in Brazil, Indonesia, and Thailand since last year. Auto analyst Felipe Munoz praised the EX2 for its quality and spacious feel compared to typical small US cars.

The Wuling MiniEV leans into the affordable, cheerful aesthetic of older low-cost vehicles. With four doors and more seating room, it remains compact by American standards. The basic model has a top speed equivalent to 62 mph and a China-rated battery range of 127 miles.

Wuling also offers a larger subcompact EV starting at just over $8,000 in China. The Bingo Pro is designed for highway travel with a battery range of 250 miles based on Chinese testing standards.

BYD, China’s leading small EV manufacturer, sold 700,000 vehicles starting under $12,000 last year. The Seagull, an immediate hit upon release three years ago, features optional lidar remote sensing system, automated lane changing, and a fast-charge feature. It also boasts a battery range of about 314 miles on the premium version according to Chinese testing standards.
