Cillian Murphy, a celebrated Oscar winner known for his gritty performances, has made a return to the world of Peaky Blinders with his new film. Now in its second decade, the iconic series is being reimagined as a gripping drama set during World War Two.
In the revamped narrative, Irish actor Murphy reprises his role as Thomas “Tommy” Shelby, the infamous leader of Birmingham’s notorious Peaky Blinders gang. After decades of retirement, Tommy steps out to thwart a Nazi conspiracy in the heart of central England.
“The idea was always up for grabs and we worked on the script for years just trying to make it right,” Murphy explained to Reuters, referring to the extensive development period leading up to this film. “It’s quite different now as a two-hour story compared to what you typically get with Peaky Blinders.”
Originally aired in 2013, the series consisted of six seasons each containing six episodes, culminating in 1919 with its first season.
Now, Murphy and his cast have brought back a new set of characters for this film. Including Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan who takes on the role of Tommy’s illegitimate son, Duke Shelby. The family dynamic forms the core narrative thread of “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.”
“We found it all about family, particularly father-son relationships,” Murphy commented. Meanwhile, Keoghan added that the violence serves as a backdrop but is most poignant when seen through those familial lenses.
The production was penned by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who also has his sights set on writing the next James Bond film. The storyline for “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” revolves around recreating the 1940 bombing of the Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) factory, where Knight’s mother worked during that period.
“My mom was working there putting explosive into artillery shells,” he revealed with emotion. “I’ve always had an interest in making Peaky rooted in these kinds of personal stories.”
Scheduled to premiere on Netflix starting March 20, the film offers viewers a new chapter in Tommy Shelby’s life and the world of Peaky Blinders set against the backdrop of World War Two.
With its rich family drama and period-appropriate violence, “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” promises an engaging cinematic experience.
