A multi-platform outage struck earlier today, triggered by service issues at content delivery network (CDN) provider, Cloudflare. The disruption led to significant downtime and elevated error rates on numerous popular websites, including social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and AI firm OpenAI.
The issues began around 6:00 AM ET, initially impacting Cloudflare’s own support portal provider. By 7:03 AM ET, Cloudflare confirmed the incident, stating that teams were actively investigating. The company’s official Status page verified the widespread nature of the outage. Root cause analysis is ongoing, although the timing coincided with scheduled maintenance in Cloudflare’s Santiago (SCL) data center.
The effects of the outage were broad, impacting both major tech services and consumer applications. Users of X reported “Something went wrong” messages, while others encountered generic security messages such as “Please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed” on sites like OpenAI. Even multiplayer games, including titles like League of Legends and Valorant, reported connectivity issues, according to downtime trackers.
Ironically, Downdetector, a popular service for tracking platform outages, was temporarily taken offline itself due to its reliance on Cloudflare’s infrastructure before quickly recovering. Many affected websites displayed generic “Internal server error” or “error code 500” messages, indicating system-wide connectivity failures.
As of the latest communication at 7:21 AM ET, Cloudflare reported services were beginning to recover. However, the company advised that customers might “continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates as we continue remediation efforts.” Internal investigations into the incident remain active.
