Colombia’s Cundinamarca province experienced a coal mine explosion on Monday, resulting in the death of nine workers and injuries to six others. The incident occurred at the La Ciscuda mine, operated by Carbonera Los Pinos.

The mining agency stated that the accident was likely caused by a buildup of gases, including methane, which could become dangerous. During a site visit on April 9, the agency had identified these hazardous gases and recommended that the mine strengthen its safety measures.

Six survivors were taken to a regional hospital for treatment. Serious accidents are frequently reported at open-pit and subterranean coal and gold mines in Colombia, particularly those operating illegally or informally without proper safety protocols.
