Cuba begins prisoner release, confirms US talks

Cuba’s communist authorities have announced the release of 51 prisoners as part of negotiations initiated with both the Vatican and the United States. The move comes amid intense diplomatic pressure from President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for improved relations between his administration and Cuba.

Human rights groups like Justicia 11J reported that two individuals detained for participating in significant anti-government protests held in July 2021 have now been freed as part of these talks.

The Vatican’s involvement in the prisoner releases is not new; it has served as a mediator between Havana and Washington in the past. Cuba characterized this recent release as a “gesture of goodwill” towards the Holy See, despite lacking further details on the specific individuals released or their backgrounds.

These developments occurred shortly after Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel publicly confirmed that his government was engaged in talks with the United States. The move signals what analysts see as a subtle shift in Cuba’s diplomatic stance, one likely aimed at bolstering relations and potentially improving conditions for U.S. business ventures in the country.

Meanwhile, Trump has indicated that Cuba could be among the next countries on his agenda following the collapse of Maduro’s regime in Venezuela. This suggests broader implications for future U.S.-Cuba diplomacy beyond just these prisoner releases, hinting at a complex negotiation process unfolding behind closed doors between Havana and Washington.
