David Hockney, U.K. Art Icon and Pop Art Pioneer, Passes Away at 88

British artist David Hockney, a pivotal figure in contemporary art with a career spanning seven decades, passed away at 88 on Thursday. His death was confirmed by Bolton & Quinn PR firm, noting he died peacefully at home in London.

Hockney’s legacy is marked by his innovative multi-media approach and commitment to celebrating the world around him. Survived by his partner Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima, two brothers, and numerous relatives, Hockney was globally recognized for his contributions to Pop art.

His first posthumous exhibition at London’s Serpentine Gallery showcased new works created in collaboration with the artist. Future exhibitions were planned at Tate Modern and Oslo’s Munch Museum.

Born in 1937 in West Yorkshire, Hockney studied at Bradford School of Art and the Royal College of Art, earning a Gold Medal distinction. His work, from California landscapes to Yorkshire scenes, was celebrated internationally, including his record-breaking sale for $90.3 million in 2018. Despite his global acclaim, he remained a devoted smoker until his last days.”
