In a development that sent shockwaves through Moscow, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that a suspect has been apprehended in Dubai after being detained for his alleged role in shooting top Russian military intelligence officer Vladimir Alexeyev. The arrest comes as investigators continue to probe the attack that left Deputy GRU head Alexeyev severely wounded.

Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, aged 64 and under US sanctions over cyber interference during the 2016 US elections, was reportedly shot multiple times in his Moscow apartment by a Russian national named Lyubomir Korba. He underwent immediate medical treatment following the shooting but remains critically injured.

The FSB statement identified Korba as having been apprehended in Dubai and handed over to Russian authorities pending further legal proceedings. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of orchestrating the assassination attempt with intentions to derail ongoing peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. In response, Ukraine vehemently denied any involvement, asserting its innocence.

Alexeyev’s international sanctions were issued for his alleged role in cyber intrusions during the 2016 US elections campaign, while EU sanctions targeted him due to the poisoning of former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal by a nerve agent in Salisbury, England, in 2018. As investigations unfold, Alexeyev’s case underscores complex geopolitical tensions and the intricate web of espionage operations linked to Russia’s military intelligence arm.
