ECP Drama Unfolds as Fawad Chaudhry Escapes Contempt Indictment – Trial Continues Until Dec 27

In a turn of events, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) faced setbacks in indicting PTI founder Fawad Chaudhry for contempt on Tuesday. The hearing, held at Adiala Jail, took an unexpected twist as Fawad’s plea for an open trial forced an adjournment until Dec 27.

Fawad Chaudhry, who has been in custody since Nov 4 on corruption charges, raised concerns about the lack of access to case documents. “Without the documents, how can I know what the charges against me are?” questioned Fawad during the hearing, highlighting the apparent procedural lapses.

Adding to the drama, Fawad claimed that he had been denied the right to meet his lawyers and family, intensifying the legal battle within the confines of Adiala Jail.

The ECP’s decision to conduct the contempt trial in jail, citing “security concerns” as the reason for not producing Fawad before the bench, has raised eyebrows. The hearing is part of the ECP’s ongoing contempt proceedings initiated last year against Fawad Chaudhry and former PTI leaders Asad Umar.

Despite legal challenges and attempts to block proceedings, the Supreme Court’s January ruling allowed the ECP to continue its case. However, as of June 21, charges are yet to be formally framed against the accused, creating a lingering sense of anticipation.
