Electricity Prices to Surge: NEPRA Recommends Rs 5.62/Unit Increase

Prepare for a jolt in your electricity bills this February, as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has set the stage for a substantial price hike.

NEPRA initially recommended raising electricity prices by a noteworthy Rs5.62 per unit, citing December’s fuel price adjustments as the primary factor.

This decision, made under the leadership of NEPRA Chairman Waseem Mukhtiar, is poised to burden consumers nationwide with an estimated additional cost of Rs 42 billion in fuel adjustment charges for the month of February.

The recommendation follows a hearing on the Central Power Purchasing Agency’s (CPPA) request for a price hike to offset escalating fuel expenses. CPPA reported a reference fuel price of Rs5.40 per unit for December, a considerable uptick from the previous month’s average unit cost of Rs11. While NEPRA has provisionally approved CPPA’s proposal, a final verdict is pending further scrutiny and data analysis.
