Pakistan is grappling with a significant electricity shortfall of 6,070 megawatts, resulting in extended power outages across the country.
According to sources, the current demand for electricity stands at 26,000 megawatts, while the production is only 19,929 megawatts.
The breakdown of power generation is as follows:
- Hydroelectric power plants: 6,900 megawatts
- Public sector thermal power plants: 700 megawatts
- Private sector power plants: 7,988 megawatts
- Wind power plants: 1,000 megawatts
- Solar power plants: 199 megawatts
- Biomass (bagasse) power plants: 142 megawatts
- Nuclear power plants: 3,000 megawatts
This shortfall has led to load shedding of up to 8 hours in various parts of the country. In areas experiencing higher line losses, load shedding duration extends to 12 to 14 hours. The prolonged outages are causing major disruption in daily life and economic activities.
