Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik stated on Saturday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged citizens and the government to adopt responsible behavior amid the ongoing energy crisis.
“Malik said in a press briefing alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar that avoiding unnecessary travel, opting for remote work, continuing university classes via e-learning, and limiting entertainment could save up to a dollar. This savings would help manage fuel costs.”
The minister further emphasized that Premier Sharif has called on people to act responsibly and assist those in need.
He pledged from the Prime Minister’s office that resources would be allocated to address the crisis, with special focus on protecting vulnerable communities.
Malik highlighted the unprecedented rise in global oil prices, noting Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had arranged for crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia and the UAE during these challenging times through diplomatic channels. He explained that despite the Strait of Hormuz being closed, both countries continue to provide uninterrupted supplies via alternative routes.
At the start of his address, Malik noted that Eid celebrations were overshadowed by regional conflicts. He criticized former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government for its handling of the situation in 2022, stating it lacked preparation and led to bankruptcy.
Malik pointed out that crude oil prices have reached their highest levels in recent history, with diesel costs increasing from $80 per barrel to over $200. The minister described the decision to pass on these increased costs as a bold move by Premier Sharif, who also instructed refineries not to hesitate purchasing expensive fuel to maintain supply and ensure government recovery of full amounts.
The priority is ensuring fuel availability,” Malik concluded, adding that austerity measures would prevent oil price hikes from affecting consumers. These measures have already saved the government Rs27 billion in special funds, which will be used to mitigate the impact on ordinary citizens.
