Federal agents in Minneapolis fatally shot Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old registered nurse who is a US citizen, during an incident on Saturday morning. This shooting occurred less than three weeks after ICE agent Renee Good was killed by federal immigration officers amid a surge in enforcement activities across the city.

Pretti’s family released a statement expressing profound sorrow and anger at their son’s death. They have called for transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding his fatal encounter with federal law enforcement officials.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension filed a lawsuit along with a motion for a temporary injunction in US District Court for the District of Minnesota. A witness who recorded video during the incident claimed she did not see Pretti with a weapon prior to his death.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Democrats will not provide the necessary votes to advance a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security, citing their stance against federal law enforcement’s involvement in this matter. In response, Schumer said, “I will vote no; Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed with the DHS appropriations bill if it includes support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.”

US Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed ongoing investigations into today’s fatal shooting. He criticized state and local officials for their resistance to federal law enforcement, which he believes contributed to this escalation. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed support for ICE agents on social media following the incident.

These events have sparked significant legal and political controversy over accountability and cooperation between federal and local authorities in handling immigration-related incidents.
