Speaking after the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom said high ticket prices were reflective of market realities in North America. He acknowledged fans’ concerns but noted a range of ticket prices available.

FIFA faced significant criticism over ticket pricing this year, with Football Supporters Europe (FSE) branding it “extortionate” and a “betrayal.” FSE filed a lawsuit against FIFA for excessive ticket prices.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the high prices as a result of demand, citing dynamic pricing in the US. Ticket resale platforms have shown World Cup final tickets available for up to $2 million each.

Grafstrom expressed concern over backlash potentially harming the legacy of the 2026 World Cup but emphasized that revenues from the tournament could be used to boost football development through FIFA’s Forward program.
