Florida Republican Congressman Fine Faces Backlash for Anti-Muslim Remarks

In a wave of criticism sweeping across the United States, Republican Congressman Randy Fine sparked controversy with inflammatory remarks in a social media post. He suggested Muslims should be chosen over dogs if forced to decide in an exchange on X (formerly Twitter) with New York-based activist Nerdeen Kiswani.

Fine’s statement was swiftly flagged as dehumanizing rhetoric and quickly garnered sharp condemnation from prominent figures, civil rights organizations, and international observers. California Governor Gavin Newsom immediately demanded Fine’s resignation, posting: “Resign now, you racist slob.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the country’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, joined in the backlash, citing a broader pattern of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian sentiment. CAIR pointed out that Fine had previously referred to Palestinian identity as “evil” and supported the deportation of Muslims.

This is not the first time Congressman Fine has faced scrutiny. A staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, Fine frequently sparked controversy over his stance on the Gaza conflict and Islamic law. He was also associated with a congressional group focused on countering Sharia influence in America.

Despite mounting calls for resignation, Fine maintained his defiance, asserting that he is “not afraid” of being labeled Islamophobic and stood by his initial remarks. Democratic lawmakers, including Representative Ilhan Omar, have urged an official inquiry into what they describe as a “longstanding pattern of hateful rhetoric,” while House Republican leadership remains silent on formal disciplinary measures.

The incident has amplified deep religious and political divides within the US Capitol. Civil rights groups warn that inflammatory language from elected officials can embolden real-world violence and discrimination against the American Muslim community, underscoring the severity of the current climate.
