Former fiancé of Southern California mayor sentenced for China agent role

The mayor of Arcadia, California, has declined to comment on her former fiancé’s sentencing. After pleading guilty to acting as an illegal agent for China from at least 2022 to January 2024 without notifying the attorney general, Yaoning ‘Mike’ Sun, a 55-year-old man, was sentenced to four years in federal prison.

According to the US Department of Justice, this case highlights the dangerous infiltration of foreign influence into our democratic institutions. Prosecutors revealed that during his time as campaign staffer for another individual who later won a city council seat in November 2022, Sun also worked on behalf of China without proper authorization.

This collaboration spanned from 2020 to 2023 and included running what was described as a local news website. The site published articles supportive of the Chinese government, all under directives from officials in Beijing.

A former fiancé to Eileen Wang, Mike Sun’s work has cast a shadow over Arcadia’s political landscape. During Arcadia’s first city council meeting following his sentencing, Mayor Wang refused to comment on these developments.

In a statement by the US Department of Justice, it was disclosed that Sun worked with another individual who had a significant impact in local Chinese American affairs. Both individuals operated within a framework designed to serve the interests of Beijing.

This case underscores the severe consequences of foreign influence infiltrating our domestic politics and raises questions about safeguards against such violations in future elections.
