Zaki Aijaz, Regional Chairman and Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), on Monday called on the government to grant industry status to the packaging sector and revise contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Addressing members of the All Pakistan Corrugated Cartons Manufacturers Association (APCCMA) at the FPCCI Regional Office in Lahore, Aijaz emphasized that renegotiating capacity payment agreements with IPPs could reduce high-power tariffs, which are hindering economic growth.

He highlighted that the packaging sector is crucial for all industries, facilitating the delivery of products to local and international consumers. Despite its significance, the sector has not yet been granted industry status. Aijaz pointed out that the packaging industry is the third-largest in the world and the fifth-largest in Asia.

Aijaz also stressed the need for environmentally friendly packaging, stating that promoting this sector could significantly contribute to the country’s development and help earn substantial foreign exchange.
