French TV host France Pierron has apologized for her comments criticizing soccer star Jérémy Doku’s decision to leave the World Cup to attend his newborn child’s birth. The controversy began when Doku announced he would fly to London to be with his wife during childbirth, prompting Pierron to say on “L’Equipe de Choc” that being a dad during childbirth is “useless.” Her apology came after widespread backlash and disavowal from her employer, L’Equipe.
Doku’s absence from the World Cup due to respiratory illness was not enough for him to be present for his wife’s birth of their son Praise. He expressed gratitude for messages received and commitment to representing Belgium in future matches. Belgian captain Youri Tielemans also supported Doku, emphasizing that having a child is one of life’s greatest blessings.
Belgium faces New Zealand at BC Place on Friday, with the outcome potentially deciding their path through the World Cup tournament.
