A German palliative care doctor has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for allegedly murdering 15 patients between September 2021 and July 2024. The doctor, identified as Johannes M., was accused of using deadly cocktails of sedatives on his victims who were all receiving care at the time.
On at least five occasions, he allegedly set fire to the victims’ apartments to cover up the killings. Prosecutors claim that he may have killed over 70 people and demanded a life sentence, additional steps to make early release less likely, and a lifetime ban from practicing medicine.
Johannes M., in his confession, expressed despair at himself and acknowledged understanding “the extent of the suffering” he had caused. The victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 years old. On one occasion, two patients were killed on the same day.
The suspect’s activities were initially raised by care services, leading to a police investigation. He was remanded in custody in August 2024 as investigators looked into four cases and found further suspicious deaths still under investigation.
According to prosecutors, Johannes M. had no motive for killing other than the act itself. This case echoes that of Niels Hoegel, a German nurse jailed for life in 2019 for murdering 85 patients with lethal injections between 2000 and 2005.
