Gisèle Pelicot, a French woman whose courage in standing up against her ex-husband and dozens of men accused of mass rape catapulted her into the international spotlight, now seeks to inspire others with her personal story. In an exclusive U.S. broadcast interview airing on “CBS Sunday Morning” February 15th, Pelicot opened up about her harrowing experiences without any sense of secrecy or anonymity.

Pelicot recounted how she had lived a seemingly ordinary life until discovering shocking truths about her relationship with Dominique Pelicot. The revelation that he drugged her and lured other men into assaulting her for nearly a decade sent shockwaves through the court system, culminating in 51 men being found guilty during the four-month trial.

In her memoir, “A Hymn to Life: Shame Has to Change Sides,” Pelicot details her initial disbelief at what was happening under the guise of their relationship. She describes how she had been suffering unexplained health issues for years and noted several instances where her drinks tasted off or even undrinkable. Her husband would sometimes prepare potatoes separately, an act that seemed suspiciously out of place.

“I never imagined I was living with a man who was drugging his wife in his home,” Pelicot said, recalling the disbelief she felt as she attempted to piece together the pieces of her life. “It was impossible.” Pelicot later realized her husband had been manipulating her for about ten years through these tactics, while appearing every day as a kind and caring individual.

Pelicot’s bravery did not go unnoticed; she chose to make her story public despite facing significant backlash and threats. Her memoir will be published by Penguin Press next week, providing an account of a tale that is both harrowing and enlightening for survivors navigating similar experiences.

As Pelicot looks towards the future, she hopes her story can serve as inspiration and guidance for others who may find themselves in dark and abusive circumstances, urging them to seek help and never lose faith in their own voices.
