Google has signed a deal with the US Department of Defence, previously known as the Department of War by President Donald Trump, to use its artificial intelligence models for classified work. This agreement allows the Pentagon to utilize Google’s AI for any lawful government purpose.

The Pentagon also signed agreements worth up to $200 million each in 2025 with other major AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI. These deals aim to preserve all flexibility in defense operations without being limited by warnings from technology creators against using unreliable AI for weapons.

Google’s agreement requires the company to help adjust its AI safety settings and filters at the government’s request. The contract includes language stating that the AI system is not intended for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, but it also notes that the agreement does not confer any right to control or veto lawful government operational decision-making.
