A high-level meeting in Karachi has convened to address Pakistan’s growing energy supply concerns, following escalating tensions in the Middle East. The gathering included Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik.
The participants delved into how regional upheavals might affect Pakistan’s fuel supplies and economy. Officials expressed concern that heightened tensions could propel global crude oil prices towards $120 per barrel, intensifying financial pressures on the nation’s economy.
Among the attendees was Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, who informed the group of three petroleum cargo ships expected to dock in Pakistan by Monday, aiming to alleviate current fuel shortages. The minister stressed the need for existing reserves to be used more judiciously to sustain essential sectors.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb reinforced this message, noting that rising international oil prices could lead to a $600 million hike in monthly import bills. The federal government is currently considering emergency conservation measures and has intensified diplomatic efforts with neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to procure alternative fuel supplies via non-Hormuz routes.
Echoing Aurangzeb, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah affirmed that safeguarding economic operations remains a top priority for the administration. Discussions also emphasized the importance of maintaining uninterrupted energy flow for sustainable economic activities.
The meeting concluded with a decision to set up a joint monitoring dashboard between federal and provincial authorities, aimed at tracking fuel reserves and preventing hoarding at petrol pumps. Participants agreed to enhance coordination efforts to ensure consistent fuel distribution throughout Pakistan.
