A great white shark was recorded in the Mediterranean Sea during a dive off the Strait of Sicily by Derk Remmers, a volunteer diver. The sighting is believed to be the first underwater video of the species in the region.
Remmers told BBC that “the shark was pretty close to us … and my fingers were trembling when I tried to get the camera operating.” He described spotting the shark offshore as “insane.”
The Healthy Seas foundation, which organized Remmers’ mission to remove abandoned fishing nets, had previously documented animals trapped in such gear at the site.
Since 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified great white sharks as “critically endangered” in the Mediterranean Sea.
