Greece Considering Social Media Ban for Under-15s Amidst Growing Concerns

Greece is set to announce a social media ban for minors under 15. The decision comes after global concerns over child safety and mental health impacts of social media use among teenagers.

A senior government official from Greece told Reuters on February 3, 2026, that the country in the Balkan region is “very close” to implementing a ban, restricting access to social media sites allegedly affecting minors’ physical and mental well-being.

While Australia took the lead by becoming the world’s first country to completely restrict access to nearly ten social media platforms for under 16s, including Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok (X), YouTube, Reddit, Kick, and Twitch, Greece is not alone in its stance.

Spain also plans to ban social media use for those aged under 16 and intends to create a law holding social media executives accountable for hate speech on their platforms.

Earlier this year, Denmark, Malaysia, France, and Germany have already announced similar restrictions aimed at curbing the negative impacts of social media on younger users.
