New York University professor Justin Cappos says that while it’s theoretically possible for fingerprints to be extracted from photos online, the risk is low for the average person.
“Better chance of being hit by a car tomorrow,” he said.
Experts say even if hackers obtain your fingerprint, they would need access to the physical scanner and likely target high-value individuals with sensitive information.
Most cybercriminals focus on phishing scams rather than attempting to weaponize online photos.
