Firefighters warned residents to flee an out-of-control bushfire in southeast Australia on Tuesday as a severe heatwave swept across much of the country. Temperatures reached record highs in Victoria’s eastern region, with preliminary data showing 40-degree Celsius readings. Country Fire Authority Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said conditions were heating up rapidly and winds were picking up significantly.
Emergency evacuation warnings were issued for hundreds of people living in four rural towns at risk from the fire in the Otways region southwest of Melbourne. Authorities also advised residents in three nearby areas to leave their homes, cautioning that the blaze was expected to rapidly expand and pose a threat to communities. A total fire ban was imposed on Victoria, where six major bushfires were currently burning.
In northern Victoria, temperatures peaked at 48.9°C, exceeding the state’s previous record of 48.8°C set in 2013. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that this reading would need to be verified before being officially recorded as a new high.
The heatwave closed Melbourne’s Australian Open centre court due to safety concerns and prompted authorities to open additional air-conditioned viewing areas for fans. In Victoria, elderly individuals, children, and people with underlying health conditions were identified as the most vulnerable groups during the prolonged heat period.
Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures can lead to fatal health issues such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Chief Health Officer Caroline McElnay urged citizens to stay cool and hydrated, monitoring for symptoms like dizziness, cramps, rapid pulse, high body temperature, and unconsciousness.
