Hundreds Evacuated as Waves Hit Wellington

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little declared a state of emergency on Monday for seaside residents in Owhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay and Breaker Bay. Authorities evacuated hundreds from their homes as 11-metre waves lashed the coast.

Little warned in a statement that emergency workers would not help anyone who stayed behind, directing people to stay away from the southern coastline. Police were brought in to ensure movement to higher ground, with cordons set up on surrounding roads.

Waves entering Wellington Harbour measured at 11 metres on Tuesday, with wind gusts strong enough to knock two women off their feet and cancel some flights at Wellington Airport. A small plane tipped onto its side while parked but was secured by firefighters.
