Hyundai Recalls 54K Hybrids Over Fire Risk Concerns

Hyundai Motor Company is recalling over 54,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a potential fire risk associated with overheating components. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced this on Wednesday, affecting certain 2024-2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid models.

Overheating in the hybrid power control unit under high electrical loads could cause affected vehicles to fail to start or switch into reduced-power mode. In some cases, the overheating “could lead to localized thermal damage to the assembly and internal components”.

Officials warn that if left unresolved, this issue may increase the risk of a vehicle fire. Dealers will update the affected software free of charge as part of the recall.

No injuries or crashes linked to the defect have been reported yet. This recall highlights ongoing scrutiny faced by global automakers regarding hybrid and electric vehicle safety systems, particularly issues related to overheating batteries and electrical components. Affected drivers are expected to be notified by Hyundai with instructions on arranging repairs through authorized dealerships.
