ISLAMABAD—Barrister Salman Safdar, appointed by the Supreme Court as a friend of the court, held a detailed meeting with jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for over three hours. After leaving Central Jail Rawalpindi, Safdar avoided formal media talk and did not share further details about his discussions.
Safdar, who has been tasked with reviewing the prison conditions for Khan, confirmed to journalists that the imprisoned leader’s health was good during their meeting. He added, “It would be inappropriate to comment further until I submit my detailed report to the Supreme Court.”
The meeting came in response to a request from Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who ordered Safdar to meet with Imran Khan and inspect his living conditions. The Supreme Court’s bench granted Safdar full access to observe the facilities where the PTI founder was held.
Safdar confirmed that he would not disclose any specifics of their conversation until after submitting a comprehensive written report on Imran Khan’s health, prison accommodations, and available facilities to the court. Sources indicated that his findings will cover these critical aspects in detail.
Imran Khan has been serving time since August 2023 following his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022. He has faced numerous charges including corruption and terrorism-related offenses. Weeks ago, he underwent a brief eye procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for around twenty minutes.
Meanwhile, the PTI has recently submitted a memorandum to the Supreme Court registrar seeking expanded visitation rights for Khan, including meetings with family members, doctors, lawyers, and friends. The party also raised concerns about his medical care while in custody.
