Prolific Indian batsman Abhishek Sharma faces a potential setback ahead of India’s crucial T20 World Cup group match against Namibia. The 25-year-old opener has been hospitalized with an upset stomach, raising concerns for India’s title defense in the 20-team tournament.

India’s senior cricket officials are closely monitoring Sharma’s condition. The right-handed batter was admitted to a Delhi hospital on Tuesday after missing training sessions due to gastrointestinal issues that have troubled him since the team’s first match against the United States. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate expressed his concern, noting that Sharma has “still got a few issues with his tummy.”

“We hope that Abhishek will be available for the group game in New Delhi within a week,” said ten Doeschate.

Sharma played a crucial role in India’s victory over the United States but hasn’t quite matched his previous performances. His absence could significantly impact India’s chances against Namibia, which is known to pose a formidable challenge.

India faces Pakistan in an anticipated blockbuster match on Sunday, adding another layer of importance to this World Cup showdown. However, the Pakistani side has signaled their intent by withdrawing plans to boycott the game, following Bangladesh’s decision to withdraw from the tournament due to India’s refusal to tour them after they refused to tour Afghanistan earlier.

This reversal is a result of protracted negotiations between various cricket boards and international bodies such as the International Cricket Council (ICC), consultations with national leaders, and support from friendly nations including Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
