After a brutal incident in Sanghar where a landlord allegedly amputated a camel’s leg, authorities have confirmed that the injured animal will be fitted with an artificial leg.
Sanghar Deputy Commissioner Imran ul Hassan Khawaja announced during a press conference on Sunday that the camel was moved to Karachi and will soon receive the prosthetic limb.
The incident, which occurred in Sanghar’s Mundh Jamrao area when the camel entered an agricultural field, led to the arrest of five individuals accused of maiming the animal. They have been remanded in custody for four days by a district and sessions court. A viral video of the incident sparked widespread condemnation, initially prompting the police to file a first information report (FIR) against unknown persons. However, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ijaz later confirmed the arrest of five people, with two confessing to the crime.
In response, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has promised to provide two camels to the owner of the injured animal.
Sarah Jahangir, Director of the CDRS Benji Project, which is currently sheltering the wounded camel in Karachi, stated that the animal’s condition is stable. “Her amputated leg has been treated, and we are working with professionals to arrange a prosthetic leg,” she said.
Jahangir noted that while their organization often deals with abused animals, this case was exceptionally severe. “We’ve handled cases of abused donkeys, but nothing this horrific. This is a different level of evil,” she commented. She confirmed that the camel will remain with the non-profit organization permanently, as the original owner is not equipped to care for a disabled camel.
