Iran challenges US to escort oil tankers through Hormuz Strait

In a renewed standoff in the Middle East, Iran has urged the United States to assume responsibility for ensuring safe passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. The recommendation comes amid escalating tensions that have already halted shipping and energy exports in the vital strait.

US President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of US naval vessels deploying to escort tankers earlier this week, a move Tehran has now officially endorsed. Iranian officials welcomed such an initiative but emphasized historical precedent as a cautionary note.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Alimohammad Naini, asserted: “Iran strongly welcomes the US forces’ presence to ensure the crossing of the Strait of Hormuz.” This call comes on the heels of repeated attacks and sabotage against shipping in the area.

Since the beginning of Israeli-American strikes on Iranian targets last Saturday, Iran has ordered ships not to venture into the strategic strait. The situation underscores how a single incident can spark wider conflict and disrupt global trade routes crucial for energy supplies worldwide.

The remarks by Naini also drew attention to the 1987 fire that damaged an American supertanker within Iranian territorial waters—an event seen as significant in the current diplomatic climate.

Iran’s stance reflects its growing assertiveness in asserting control over the Strait of Hormuz, a move underscored by the increased attacks on shipping vessels. This latest development highlights how a seemingly isolated incident can escalate into broader geopolitical confrontation involving major powers and deepening tensions across the region.
