In recent diplomatic maneuvers, Iran has emphasized its right to enrich uranium as a crucial element for resuming stalled nuclear talks with the United States. On Friday, American and Iranian diplomats engaged indirectly in talks held in Oman, amidst heightened tensions over US naval deployments near Iran’s shores and Tehran’s threat of severe retaliation should it be attacked.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that zero enrichment could not be accepted by Iran. Consequently, he suggested focusing on discussions where uranium enrichment within the country is acknowledged while ensuring such activity adheres to peaceful purposes. Araqchi made this remark during an indirect dialogue with American diplomats in Oman.
Last year, Iran and the US conducted five rounds of nuclear negotiations, but these talks failed primarily due to disagreements over the extent of Iranian uranium enrichment capabilities. In June, the United States attacked key Iranian nuclear facilities following a 12-day Israeli bombing campaign.
Tehran has since halted enrichment activities, which the US perceives as potentially leading to nuclear proliferation. Iran asserts that its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes. A diplomat briefed by Iran informed Reuters on Friday of Tehran’s openness to discussing enrichment levels and other arrangements provided it could continue enriching uranium domestically while receiving sanctions relief alongside a reduction in military tensions.
Araqchi highlighted the significance of Iran’s insistence on uranium enrichment, explaining that this stance was driven not merely by technical or economic considerations but also as a manifestation of independence and national dignity. He clarified that Iran did not see any right being granted to dictate its entitlements.
Despite Araqchi’s assertion that Iran’s missile program would remain outside the current negotiation agenda, President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized on Sunday that talks with the US represented progress towards ensuring Tehran’s rights under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty were respected.
The date and venue for future negotiations are yet to be determined but will involve consultations with Oman, potentially bypassing Muscat.
