Iran suspends attacks on neighbors unless provoked, defies Trump’s demand for unconditional surrender

TEHRAN (Reuters) – In a significant shift from earlier aggressive stances, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Saturday that its leadership council had approved a temporary ceasefire against neighboring countries. Pezeshkian issued an official apology to these nations for recent attacks, emphasizing that Iran does not seek confrontation but is responding to provocations.

Pezeshkian’s statement comes in the wake of Iran’s retaliatory strikes on US military bases across the region, following American and Israeli assaults. These actions resulted in the martyrdom of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous civilian casualties. Pezeshkian declared that these attacks were defensive measures in response to foreign aggression.

Despite the temporary ceasefire, Pezeshkian underscored Iran’s resolve: it will not surrender to either the United States or Israel under any circumstances. He dismissed the notion of an “unconditional surrender,” asserting that Iran’s commitment to its weapons is steadfast and unyielding.

These recent developments contrast sharply with President Donald Trump’s stance, who demanded an immediate ceasefire demanding “unconditional surrender” from Iran a week prior. In his social media post following these events, Trump outlined plans for bolstering Iran’s economy if the country were to adhere to his conditions. Trump also indicated his interest in personally choosing the next leader of Iran, which has sparked controversy and criticism within the region.

Earlier this week, Israeli authorities claimed they initiated a new phase of their conflict with Tehran, targeting “regime infrastructure.” This escalated violence has spread beyond Iran’s borders into the Indian Ocean, where a US submarine sank an Iranian naval vessel off Sri Lanka’s coast. The incident underscored the growing regional tension and military escalation between powers.

This shift in Iran’s stance comes amidst ongoing tensions that have seen leaders from multiple countries express their concerns over escalating violence. Pezeshkian’s statement on ceasefire has raised hopes for a cooling of hostilities, though it remains to be seen whether this truce will hold. The broader impact of these actions continues to shape international dynamics and regional security strategies.

As Trump maintains his position demanding an unconditional surrender from Iran, the geopolitical landscape stands poised for further developments in what promises to be a volatile situation.
