Italy Mobilizes Amidst Growing Gulf Crisis

As tensions escalate between Iran and the United States, Italy is stepping up its military response to bolster security in the Middle East. The government announced on Thursday that it would send air defense equipment to countries like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar after Iranian strikes hit several oil facilities. Additionally, Italy pledged naval assets for Cyprus amidst fears of a broader conflict.

The conflict has already reached into Asia, with thousands of stranded tourists attempting to flee the region’s tumultuous atmosphere. Right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that Italy would provide air defense support to Gulf states seeking aid and protect Italian citizens on the ground as well. “These are people we want to, and must, protect,” she stated.

Meloni addressed parliament via a radio interview, where she discussed lifting national air defenses to their highest level in response to Iran’s retaliation. The minister emphasized that Italy would send vessels to protect Cyprus alongside several European allies. This decision comes after sources told Reuters that supplies might include surface-to-air missile systems like the SAMP/T batteries.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani shared at a parliamentary hearing that since the conflict began, around 10,000 nationals have been evacuated from affected areas, where tens of thousands of Italians live and over 2,500 troops are deployed. Opposition politicians criticized Meloni for missing parliament sessions and lacking a political strategy in response to the crisis.

The opposition leader Benedetto Della Vedova emphasized that Meloni’s absence was unacceptable, adding, “She was supposed to be here today.” In her interview, Meloni addressed possible requests from the US military bases on Italian soil, assuring that no such request has been received and noting the ongoing logistical agreements with the United States. These include technical authorizations for non-bombing operations.
