James Cameron opened up about his long-standing friendship with Sigourney Weaver during Sunday’s 53rd Annual Saturn Awards. The director revealed that they are on great terms not just as colleagues but also as humans.

Weaver is described by Cameron as someone who “just really gets it, and she takes her craft seriously.” “Sigourney is very serious about her work,” he said. This shared commitment to perfection led them to collaborate in the forthcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash sequel.

Cameron added, “We kind of meet in that quest for excellence. She’s just incredible; every time she brings something new with her characters, it’s flawless.”

“We look at her character in the Avatar sequels,” Cameron continued, referencing Weaver’s portrayal of a 70-plus-year-old avatar who defies age. “She plays a 15-year-old flawlessly – something no one can do. She always delivers that level of performance.”

A December interview with PEOPLE backed up this sentiment: “She’s amazing now and looks like she got younger, which is quite remarkable,” Cameron remarked. “Sigourney never changes; she just comes in different people at the beginning of each shoot. It’s fascinating to see her evolve while maintaining that extraordinary talent and depth.”

Both professionals’ dedication to their craft has cemented a lasting bond between them, with Cameron crediting Weaver for bringing new layers to her roles despite aging visibly on screen.
