Japan and Netherlands Draw in High-Scoring World Cup Match
On Sunday, Japan and the Netherlands secured a 2-2 draw at a packed Texas stadium with 69,285 spectators. The match, which had been relatively subdued initially, came to life in the second half.
Netherlands’ captain Virgil van Dijk scored first with a header, but Japan’s Keito Nakamura quickly equalized. Winger Crysencio Summerville then put the Netherlands ahead just after the hour mark.
Japan fought back and levelled the score at the final whistle through Daichi Kamada’s deflected shot from a corner kick.
Despite missing key players due to injuries, both teams were touted as dark horse contenders in Group F. The Dutch have been runners-up three times before, while Japan has never progressed beyond the round of 16.
The Netherlands took an early lead with a header by van Dijk, but Nakamura equalized shortly after. Summerville then scored for the Netherlands just before halftime. Kamada’s late goal secured a draw for Japan.
