JI Karachi Rejects NEPRA Tariff Hike, Calls Move ‘Anti-Karachi’

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Munim Zafar Khan has denounced NEPRA’s decision to raise K-Electric’s tariff, calling it a discriminatory move that unfairly penalises Karachi residents.

In a letter to NEPRA’s chairman, Khan condemned the passing of K-Electric’s recovery losses onto consumers, describing it as “unjust and unacceptable.” He argued that Karachiites are being forced to pay for the company’s inefficiencies.

“It is outrageous to burden honest consumers with the losses caused by K-Electric’s inefficiencies,” he wrote, rejecting what he termed an “anti-Karachi decision.”

Khan claimed that Karachi residents are paying up to Rs40 per unit—well above the national average of Rs35—accusing NEPRA of applying a double standard. He criticised both the federal government and the regulator for remaining silent during ongoing power outages, particularly amid severe heat.

He also blamed NEPRA for failing to protect Karachi consumers’ rights, asserting that the city continues to suffer from unreliable electricity despite paying more than the rest of the country.
