K-Electric has issued a preemptive alert to its consumers in Karachi, notifying them of a scheduled power outage in certain areas on Wednesday.

In the announcement, K-Electric detailed that essential maintenance work is set to be carried out by their team on the grid supplying power to several Karachi locations, including Baldia Town and the Mahmoodabad area. Consequently, residents in these areas will experience a temporary power shutdown during maintenance.

KE officials emphasized the significance of grid maintenance, highlighting its role in ensuring the overall stability of the power system. The inconvenience caused by the temporary outage is seen as a necessary step to enhance the long-term reliability of the power infrastructure.

In a recent development, K-Electric, the sole electric distribution company in Karachi, secured 20-year distribution supply licenses from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This move comes ahead of the liberalization of the power sector, as the company sought non-exclusive distribution and supplier licenses for the next two decades. NEPRA’s decision to grant a six-month extension to K-Electric ensures uninterrupted power supply to Karachi, a city of significant importance in Pakistan.

The renewal of licenses by NEPRA, following a comprehensive hearing concluding on November 28, 2023, authorizes K-Electric to continue its power supply operations in various areas, including Karachi, Uthal, Bela, Vinder, Hub, Dhabeji, and Gharo. This decision reinforces the commitment to maintaining a reliable and continuous power supply for one of Pakistan’s largest and most populous cities.
