Karachi has imposed a two-month ban on the movement of illegal rickshaws across 11 major roads in a push to improve the city’s traffic flow.
Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi announced the restriction will run from April 15 to June 14, 2025, targeting unauthorised 1+2 and 1+4 motor cab rickshaws, which authorities blame for growing congestion and road accidents.
Acting on recommendations from the Karachi Traffic Police, the ban has been enforced under Section 144 of the CrPC, with violators facing legal action under Section 188 of the PPC.
Key roads affected include:
- Shahrah-e-Faisal
- I.I. Chundrigar Road
- Shaheed-e-Millat Road
- Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar Road
- Stadium Road
Police have been instructed to take immediate action, and rickshaw drivers have been advised to seek alternative routes. The Commissioner emphasised that traffic officers are fully empowered to respond to violations on the spot.
The city administration says the move aims to enhance public safety and streamline daily commutes, especially on heavily used urban corridors.
