A protest at Nagan Chowrangi, Karachi, spiralled into violence late Wednesday after a dumper truck ran over a motorcyclist, triggering public outrage and widespread arson.

The area was already tense due to an earlier protest against dumper-related accidents. Tensions exploded when a dumper, trapped in traffic, drove recklessly through the crowd, hitting several vehicles and a motorcycle. The injured rider’s condition remains unclear.

Eyewitnesses described a dramatic pursuit as angry protesters chased the truck for several kilometres, finally catching it near Norani Hotel, Manghopir, where the driver, Nizamullah, was beaten. Police intervened to rescue him and took him into custody.

In retaliation, protesters torched at least nine heavy vehicles, including five dumpers at Powerhouse Chowrangi and four water tankers near Four K Chowrangi and Baba Mor. Firefighters managed to prevent the fires from spreading.

In response, dumper drivers staged a counter-protest at Sohrab Goth, blocking the Super Highway (M-9) with heavy machinery and debris, causing significant traffic disruptions.

Liaqat Mehsud, President of the Dumper Association, condemned the attacks and called for the arrest of those responsible for the arson. Police investigations are ongoing.
