King Charles Meets Trump, Addresses Congress on US-UK Relations

King Charles is set to visit Washington as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations. The king is expected to speak about historical ties between the U.S. and U.K., particularly during and after World War II.

Experts suggest that King Charles may reference human rights and freedoms supported by both nations post-WWII in his speech, but there’s a risk he could hint at criticism of the current administration.

President Trump met with King Charles behind closed doors on Tuesday morning, away from reporters. The meeting is expected to be positive, focusing on historical ties between the two countries.

King Charles has a delicate role due to strained relations between U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Trump over issues like Iran’s war and immigration policy.

The king may also discuss international aid for poor nations with President Trump, as U.S. foreign aid took a hit when the U.S. Agency for International Development was dismantled.

President Trump expressed optimism about the visit helping mend U.S.-U.K. relations, stating that King Charles is “fantastic” and “the answer.”

The last official visit by King Charles to Washington was in 2015 during his time as Prince of Wales when he met with then-President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Upon landing on Monday, the royal couple were greeted by a U.S. military band and school children presenting flowers. They then proceeded to the White House for a private tea and tour with President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
