Lebanon’s Talks With Israel Separate From Iran Issue, Trump Contacts Ongoing

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that negotiations with Israel are independent of Iran-related issues. At Lebanon’s request, Donald Trump’s intervention helped secure a ceasefire and initiate talks.

Aoun confirmed ongoing contacts with Trump to maintain the ceasefire. Talks with Israel will be led by former ambassador Simon Karam, who previously served as Lebanon’s envoy to the U.S.

Lebanon entered the conflict on March 2 when Hezbollah, backed by Iran, launched attacks on Israel in response to alleged targeting of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28.

Israel has been accused of violating a November ceasefire agreement. Israeli strikes have reportedly caused over 2,000 deaths and displaced more than one million people.
