In the wake of a tragic incident where a 23-year-old activist succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent assault outside a conference, French President Emmanuel Macron urged calm and restraint. The assault took place on Thursday when Rima Hassan, a far-left member of the European Parliament, hosted the event.

Hassan called for an investigation and justice on Friday, prompting Macron’s statement urging perpetrators to be held accountable. “It is essential that the perpetrators of this ignominy be prosecuted, brought to justice, and convicted,” he said via social media platforms. The activist’s identity was withheld by government authorities, but referred to as Quentin.

Quentin had been present to support anti-immigration feminist group Nemesis, which was protesting against Hassan’s event. Le Monde reported that prosecutors initiated an investigation for aggravated manslaughter, though the perpetrators were not yet identified. Political figures quickly weighed in on the incident.

Conservative Republican leader Bruno Retailleau held Hassan and her party responsible, while Marine Le Pen of the far-right National Rally (RN) called for swift prosecution with “the utmost severity.” Jean-Luc Mélenchon, head of France Unbowed (LFI), a fellow left-wing group led by Hassan, alleged that some local offices had been attacked post-public statements from Retailleau and Le Pen. He did not specify further details.

This incident has sparked intense political debate, highlighting deep divisions within French society regarding immigration policies and social movements.
