France is on edge as the death of an activist due to severe injuries from violence at a conference has sparked intense political debate. Quentin, a 23-year-old who was present to support anti-immigration feminists protesting against the gathering, died in a coma after being violently beaten outside Rima Hassan’s European Parliament meeting. The far-left member called for an investigation and justice on Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron responded with calls for calm and restraint at the weekend, emphasizing that hatred has no place among us. He reiterated his plea for prosecution on Saturday, urging all parties to remain composed amidst escalating tensions. “It is essential that the perpetrators of this ignominy be prosecuted, brought to justice and convicted,” he stated on social media.

Government officials have refused to divulge the activist’s name out of respect for their privacy. The activist’s presence at the gathering was provided by the Nemesis group, who released a statement detailing his role in supporting anti-immigration feminists during the event.

The incident has led to intense reactions from various political factions. Bruno Retailleau, leader of the conservative Republicans party and candidate for 2027 presidential elections, accused the far-left of initiating the violence. Marine Le Pen, head of National Rally (RN), demanded swift justice “with the utmost severity.” Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, head of France Unbowed (LFI) which includes Hassan as a member, indicated that some party offices were reportedly attacked following Retailleau and Le Pen’s statements.

As political leaders continue to voice their opinions, the French public stands divided. The incident highlights ongoing social and political divides in France, casting a spotlight on the country’s commitment to unity amidst such conflicts.
