A man accused of one of Australia’s deadliest shootings appeared in Sydney court for the first time on Monday, marking a significant development in the legal process surrounding this tragic incident. Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with 59 counts following the December 14 attack at Bondi Beach, which left 15 people dead.

Akram made his appearance via video link from Goulburn Correctional Centre, a maximum-security facility in southwestern Sydney where he is currently held on remand. Despite wearing prison attire and sitting mostly in silence during proceedings, he acknowledged that discussions about extending non-publication orders for victim details were ongoing.

His lawyer, Ben Archbold, described his client as coping “as well as he can be” under the stringent conditions of incarceration. Noting that Akram has yet to formally respond to charges or express any opinions on the specifics of the attack, Archbold stressed that no further information could be provided at this juncture.

Archbold revealed he had personally visited Akram in prison and reiterated his firm commitment to representing him professionally. The case is set to resume later this year, with a new hearing scheduled for April.

The gravity of the situation has gripped public attention, as the community grapples with the horrific aftermath of the attack. Authorities continue their investigation into the incident while Akram waits in prison for his next court appearance.
