In a closely contested match, Manchester City Women secured their grip on the Women’s Super League (WSL) title race with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over London City Lionesses. The win extended Manchester City’s lead at the top to nine points, as Chelsea dropped two crucial points in a 2-0 loss against Arsenal.

The match started positively for Manchester City, who took an early lead when Vivianne Miedmeester set up Kerolin de Araujo with a timely run and assist. De Araujo then scored her third league goal of the season in the 11th minute to secure a comfortable start for her side.

London City Lionesses showed resilience and determination, as Isobel Godwin came close to scoring twice, with one effort hitting the crossbar. However, they equalized through Freya Godfrey’s stunning shot in the 68th minute, halting Manchester City’s winning streak.

In a dramatic final few minutes of the match, City broke the deadlock with a penalty-kick awarded for poor clearance from London City’s defense allowing Bunny Shaw to score her crucial 13th league goal. This late winner helped Manchester City retain their top position in the WSL table.

Manchester City now have 36 points, maintaining an impressive nine-point lead over second-placed Chelsea (27) and Arsenal (28), with both teams having played one more match than Manchester City. With this victory, Manchester City are well on track to ending Chelsea’s six-year title dominance in the WSL.

Notable player of the match for Manchester City was Kerolin de Araujo, who demonstrated her versatility as a central midfielder with 70 touches, 1 goal scored, and an impressive pass completion rate (32/40) during the game. Her performance highlighted Manchester City’s depth and consistency in their midfield.

Elsewhere in the WSL, Liverpool secured their first win of the season by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at home with two stoppage-time goals from Mia Enderby. This result leaves them at the bottom of the league table. West Ham United also won against Leicester City 2-1 away but maintained a tight relegation battle.

Manchester United further strengthened their position in the top-four race as they routed Aston Villa 4-1, climbing to fourth place just one point behind Arsenal.
