In an emphatic display of dominance at the T20 World Cup, South Africa secured a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand to all but guarantee their passage into the Super Eights. The thrilling contest took place on Saturday in Ahmedabad, India, where Marco Jansen’s sharp bowling and Captain Aiden Markram’s unbeaten 86 laid bare New Zealand’s weaknesses.
Jansen played a pivotal role by restricting New Zealand to an unimpressive 175-7, setting South Africa up for a formidable chase of 176. The Proteas exploded in the power play with a powerful innings that saw them reach 83-1 before David Miller wrapped things up with a thunderous six off Mitchell Santner.
“The toss went our way and we hit it really well,” Markram acknowledged, “but New Zealand bowled us pretty hard in the second innings. They were good, very disciplined.”
Markram’s aggressive approach was instrumental as he amassed his half-century from 19 balls, powered by a six off Mitchell Santner and eight fours to finish unbeaten at 44.
South Africa lost Quinton de Kock for 20 and Ryan Rickelton for 21 to New Zealand’s deep catches. Yet, the skipper continued to dominate, adding an unbroken 47 with David Miller before securing his side’s win.
In contrast, New Zealand began cautiously but found their footing through Finn Allen, who scored a quickfire 31 off Lungi Ngidi in the third over. Tim Seifert came to life after Allen, hitting a six from Jansen’s bowling.
Jansen’s lethal combination of pace and control caused considerable trouble for New Zealand with three wickets coming within four deliveries—a standout performance by his teammate Daryl Mitchell who was caught behind off Markram’s bowling at 69.
Miller’s unbeaten tally reached 24 as he maintained a solid partnership with Markram. Neesham finished the innings, scoring successive fours in his final 15 balls for an unremarkable score of 23.
Jansen’s performance earned him player of the match honors. “He bowled really well tonight,” Mitchell remarked about Jansen’s display.
Both teams remain favorites to progress from Group D, though New Zealand and Afghanistan are still capable of upsetting the odds through underdog routes. For South Africa, this win caps a perfect 3-0 start in their tournament debut.
