Memon Warns of 22% Water Scarcity in Sindh

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has declared that the province is grappling with a severe 22% overall water shortage. This crisis not only impacts agriculture but also jeopardizes water supplies across Sindh, including Karachi.

Water shortages have reached alarming levels: 42% at Guddu Barrage and 29% at Kotri Barrage. The senior minister accuses the Indus River Systems Authority (IRSA) of unfairly reducing Sindh’s water share under the “shortage equalization” policy, which he deems contrary to the 1991 Water Apportionment Accord.

The forced power shutdown by K-Electric at Dhabeji pumping station has exacerbated the situation, leading to significant disruptions in Karachi’s water supply. The KWSC spokesperson confirmed that 10 out of 21 units were shut down due to a critical technical fault, leaving several areas without water.
